About these Web Pages

Introduction

This site, generally known as the Oxford Croquet Site, is independent and is not associated with any company, The Croquet Association, Oxford University or any other bodies. It is wholely owned and maintained by Dr Ian Plummer, Balliol College, Oxford, OX1 3BJ, UK.

Navigation

The site has been set up so that there is a top level menu on the right and a main window on the left. Links to external sites open in a new browser window as do local pages which themselves incorporate frames. Otherwise local pages should open in the main window.

If you are printing remember to click within the main window before you start printing so that the correct frame (not the menu!) gets printed out.

Page URLs

If you want to know the absolute URL for a page it is at the top left of each page and also in the centre of the footer at the bottom of each page.

New Material

The submission of new material to this site is actively encouraged. Authors should send copy, preferably in electronic form, to the webmaster. The editor reserves the right to amend copy to bring it into the format of the site or decline to include it. The material published is not necessarily ratified by the editor. We strive to cover a spectrum of views.

Rights and Copyright

It is the policy of this site that all rights, including copyright, exists with the original authors or copyright holders. If you wish to duplicate the pages for other than personal research you must contact the author or copyright holder who are identified in the footer of the document. If the means of contacting them is not obvious (e.g. an email link) please contact the webmaster and they will give you contact details where they are available. If an article or image appears on this site where it should not (e.g. the copyright holder objects) then again please contact the webmaster.

Feedback

We welcome comment on the site and the content of these pages. There is a feedback link at the bottom left of the footer on each page which allows you to send a message to us.

Browser Capabilities

The site uses a single style sheet which is not essential, hence bad browsers (e.g. Netscape 4.x) will not get confused. The site was checked with IE 6.0 and NS 4.76 and parts with Opera 6.0. In Netscape the photographs displayed left and right snag paragraphs to an extended indent but otherwise cope.

It is intended that a minimum screen size of 800x600 is used, however the pages will display if your browser window is smaller. If you want to see a page without the lefthand menu remember that you can right click in the main frame and select Open Frame in a New Window.

All image sizes have been carefully minimised (at some effort) and the default sizes hardwired into the code so that browsers can layout the page before the images have loaded. This will speed the total download and minimise the time-to-display. The diagrams of lawns, as a result of feedback, have had their green backgrounds removed in virtually every case as there were comments that the green ink reservoir on inkjet printers was getting rapidly depleted. To facilitate users with black and white printers images of balls have been branded with a letter, e.g. Y for yellow, K for black, so that even when printed in monochrome the balls can be identified.

Currently the pages have not been skimmed for excess white space - web publishing programs insist on indenting the code by padding it with spaces, which correspond to useless bytes that have to be downloaded, increasing the download time. For some pages, especially those incorporating tables, it can reduce the files size and consequent download time by 25%. Skimming will be done when the spirit moves.

Apart from two pages in the Rankings section, javascript has been avoided. All page manipulation is done on the server and hence only plain HTML is received by the client ensuring rapid display and absence of faults from instructions in the page.

The majority of text is set to browser default, with some differentiation done in Arial. No browser will have problems with these fonts.

Disabled Users

With few exceptions the pages on this site are W3C HTML 4.01 compliant. W3C HTML 4.01 compliance logo They have not yet been checked for their 'AAA' or Bobby characteristics.
