Tournament
Modified American Block with 9 Players on Two Lawns

Bob Kroeger asked: Occluded Block Of 9 - How would the seeded names appear top to bottom and what squares (games eliminated) would you block out?

David Appleton publishes this variation in the Scottish Croquet Association Handbook

The order of play is designed so that:

  1. the top 4 players will all meet
  2. the games should generally become closer as the tournament progresses
  3. the first round, with luck, should be the quickest
  4. the fourth round should be the one with only three matches to reduce the probability of pegging down.

The numbers at the intersection are the round numbers for the game, so

Round 1: BF, CG, DH, EI (other squares filled with '1' are just the pairings reversed)

Round 2: AG, CI, DF, EH

Round 3: AE, BD, FI, GH etc.
